Planetary Solvency Taskforce – members

Application closing date: 31 July 2025

The IFoA’s Sustainability Board is a member-led board of volunteer actuaries. It advises the IFoA on important sustainability issues and is a source of expertise within the profession on matters relating to the sustainability practice area.

Context

The board is proud of substantial progress made over the last 5 years.

We now have:

  • a vibrant board, with respected industry leaders, influencing global thinking, focusing on those areas where actuarial skills have most value to add, and collaborating with thought leaders and other specialists
  • a high quality weekly newsletter to over 1,000 actuaries, giving ongoing current perspectives
  • (closer to the ‘actuarial core skill set’:) 2 risk notes issues issued in last 2 years to remind all actuaries that climate risk should be on their radar and flag that some of the most respected sources may be underestimating their client’s risk

The Sustainability Board and IFoA have also collaborated to increase opportunities for actuaries and students to learn for their own personal development plan.

Call for new members: Planetary Solvency Taskforce

The IFoA is inviting applications to join the Planetary Solvency Taskforce. This is a standing task and finish group reporting to the Sustainability Board via the chair Sandy Trust.

The taskforce will play a central role in overseeing collaborative research between actuaries and leading Earth system scientists, under the Planetary Solvency brand. It will also support related strategic outreach and engagement, working closely with the IFoA executive team on content development and publication.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-impact, interdisciplinary work at the intersection of actuarial science, risk, and planetary sustainability.

We welcome applications from:

  • IFoA members and student actuaries
  • non-actuary risk specialists
  • Earth system scientists or individuals with relevant academic or policy expertise

The taskforce is particularly seeking individuals who can contribute in one or more of:

  • strategic outreach coordination
  • social media engagement and communications

You do not need to be a sustainability expert but a strong interest in the intersection of actuarial practice, planetary systems, and long-term risk is essential. Enthusiasm, collaboration, and a willingness to support the profession’s strategic sustainability goals are key.

Benefits from being involved include:

  • ability to influence and contribute to the sustainability practice area and strategy
  • professional support and assistance from within the board and IFoA staff
  • opportunity to influence the IFoA’s approach to progressing its strategy
  • chance to further develop your professional network of contacts within the sustainability industry

Time commitment

Online meetings every 2 to 4 weeks initially, dropping to a cadence of monthly.
