Actuarial Innovation Challenge 2025

We’re back with season two of the Actuarial Innovation Challenge, a case study competition for university students across South Asia. Jointly organised by the ÐßÐßÊÓÆµ (IFoA) and the , this competition is designed to bring together the brightest undergraduate minds to solve real-world actuarial problems.

If you’re studying STEM, commerce, economics, or mathematics-related subjects that could lead to an actuarial career, this is your chance to:

Who can take part

  • Open to undergraduate students in STEM, commerce, economics, mathematics, or other actuarial-relevant fields.
  • Teams of up to three members.
  • Each university/college can nominate a maximum of four teams.

Competition journey

The competition comprises three rounds: the preliminary round, online presentation round (solution presentation) and the final round (advance solution).

Register your team online by completing the registration form.

Registration open from 10 September to 8 October.

 

Preliminary round

Preparation: 

Participants carry out research to solve the challenge question and submit their solution in the form of presentation slides.

The guidelines below outline the challenge question. They also provide hints and tips for what you should research and consider when coming up with your solution.

Submissions must adhere to the guidelines.

Submission:

Submit your presentation slides in PDF format by 8 October.

Only one entry per team is allowed. 

The top 20 teams are shortlisted for the next round based on the accuracy and creativity of their submissions.

The shortlisted teams are announced on 17 October.

 

Online presentation round (solution presentation)

The 20 shortlisted teams present their preliminary round solution to a panel of judges. 

Presentation dates to be confirmed nearer the time.

The top 10 teams advance to the final round. 

The finalists are announced on 7 November.

 

Final round (advance solution)

The 10 finalist teams present to the final judging panels on 7 December at Hotel Andaz in Aerocity, Delhi during the IFoA India Conference 2025.

The teams have the opportunity to refine and develop the ideas expressed in their first submission. We ask more questions that increase the complexity when the finalists are announced on 7 November.

The winners are announced during the event.

Important dates

  • Registration opens: 10 September
  • Registration closes: 8 October
  • Preliminary round submissions due: 8 October
  • Announcement of preliminary-round shortlisted teams: 17 October
  • Online presentation round: 29 to 31 October or 3 to 5 November. This will be confirmed with you nearer the time.
  • Announcement of finalists: 7 November
  • Final round: 7 December

Prizes and recognition

  • Cash prizes: Attractive prizes (in the form of coupons) for the top three teams.
  • Certificates: All participants will receive digital certificates that recognise their contributions.
  • Featured on website: Winning case studies will be published on the competition website.

Judging criteria

  • Accuracy and relevance: How well does your solution address the actuarial challenge?
  • Creativity and innovation: What unique approaches have you used to solve the problem?
  • Presentation skills: How clearly and effectively do you communicate your ideas?

The ‘Actuarial Alchemists’ from Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning delivered an exceptional solution, earning the top honours.

157 teams registered from over 40 colleges. The overwhelming participation showcased the growing interest in actuarial science and innovation among students across India and South Asia.

Five teams from Nepal, comprising 15 dedicated students, showed unmatched enthusiasm by travelling significant distances to take part.

Out of the 157 entries, 23 teams made it to the semi-finals and 10 teams competed in the grand finale. They each presented ground-breaking solutions to address real-world challenges.

The Actuarial Innovation Challenge 2024 was among the IFoA India Conference 2024’s standout moments.  The challenge encouraged participants to develop innovative insurance solutions for disadvantaged communities, blending creativity with technical expertise.

The competition set the tone for the conference by emphasising the importance of innovation and collaboration in solving actuarial and societal challenges.
