AI, data science and emerging technologies

The AI, Data Science and Emerging Technologies Practice Board explores how transformative technologies are reshaping actuarial practice and influencing broader societal systems.

The practice board, formed in November 2025, is a member-led initiative developed in partnership between IFoA Council and the IFoA AI and Data Science Community. It provides leadership in emerging field as members investigate the impact of AI, data science and new technologies on actuarial practice and society.

The formation of the new practice board is an important step in ensuring actuaries remain leaders in a rapidly changing world, equipped to harness evolving technology and drive innovation in the actuarial profession.

About the practice area

This practice area started out as a working party in 2018 when it succeeded the Modelling, Analytics and Insights from Data Working Party. The working party then evolved into the AI and Data Science Community, which led to the creation of the practice board.

Through its working parties, the board delivers regular content (including but not limited to research papers, case studies, webinars, events), education, and strengthening the blend of data science in actuarial and industry applications.

Its vision is to become a centre of excellence, being the primary route of engagement between IFoA and members with an interest in AI, data science and emerging technologies.
